The economy of the belt was brutally simple: rock into money. Asteroids rich in nickel, iron, cobalt, platinum group metals, and water ice were the lifeblood of the inner solar system. Earth required raw materials for orbital construction and manufacturing, while Mars depended on shipments of refined metals to build its rapidly growing cities.

Workers were paid through corporate credit contracts issued by HEC Helios. Salaries were technically generous by Earth standards, but most belt workers lived inside a closed corporate economy. Pay arrived as digital Helios Credits, spendable primarily at company stations, supply depots, and transport hubs. Many miners joked that the company owned their air, their bunk, and even the gravity under their feet.

Entertainment was essential for psychological survival. Recreation rings contained small bars, music halls, and virtual reality lounges where workers could simulate forests, oceans, or old Earth cities. Gambling on mining claims became a common pastime. Stories circulated endlessly in station bars—tales of lucky strikes, corporate conspiracies, and the occasional rumor of something strange discovered inside the oldest rocks.

Politically, HEC Helios held extraordinary influence. The corporation controlled transportation, oxygen production, mining rights, and communication infrastructure throughout much of the belt. While Earth governments technically maintained legal authority, enforcement across millions of kilometers proved nearly impossible. In practice, Helios policies shaped daily life far more than distant planetary laws.

Historians now view the belt era as the beginning of humanity’s true multi-planetary civilization. The miners, engineers, pilots, and technicians who lived among the rocks formed the backbone of an economy that would eventually support hundreds of off-world settlements.
